Cloisonné may sound complicated, but making it into a bookmark is actually quite achievable. Below is a simplified tutorial suitable for absolute beginners.
Materials Needed
- Bookmark base (wood or plastic sheet both work)
- Fine copper wire (also called gold wire)
- Adhesive glue for wire
- Colored sand or enamel glaze
- Sand fixative, coating glue
- Tools: tweezers, scissors, small spatula, dropper
Step 1: Design Drawing
Lightly sketch the pattern outline on the base with a pencil. Beginners are advised to start with simple patterns such as flower petals, leaves, or cloud patterns. Bookmarks are small (usually 2-3cm wide and 10-15cm long), so the design shouldn’t be too complicated.
Step 2: Wire Inlaying
This is the step that requires the most patience.
- Apply glue: Evenly apply adhesive glue along the drawn lines.
- Inlay wire: When the glue is half dry, use tweezers to bend the copper wire along the outline and stick it onto the base. The joints of the copper wire should fit tightly to prevent sand from leaking during the coloring step.
- Tip: You can try bending the copper wire into shape without applying glue first, then apply glue to fix it in place—this makes it easier to control.
Step 3: Enamel Filling
- Mix sand: Use sand fixative and water to mix the colored sand evenly.
- Apply color: Use a small spatula or dropper to fill the colored sand into the wire frames. Don’t fill too full at once—layer it gradually. For gradient effects, place mixed colors in the middle and transition toward both sides.
- Leveling: Gently slide the small spatula to spread the color evenly.
Step 4: Setting and Decoration
- Wait for partial drying: Let the piece air dry naturally.
- Apply coating glue: When completely dry, spray on coating glue to fix the colors.
- Add tassel: Attach a tassel, and your unique cloisonné bookmark is complete.
Tips
- Positioning the copper wire during inlaying is the hardest part to control—just try a few more times and you’ll get it
- Apply color in small amounts multiple times to avoid overflowing the wire frames
- Though the bookmark is small, each step contains craftsmanship—patience is your best tool
